TRIFECTA OF MEDILAW SPECIALISTS ELECTED TO AMA QUEENSLAND POSITIONS

Congratulations to Associate Professor Christian Rowan, Medilaw’s specialist Addiction Medicine and Pain Physician who has been elected as the President for AMA Queensland for 2012-13. Dr Rowan has been active AMA Queensland Council and Committee member for 5 years and is also a serving Director on the AMA Queensland Board. Dr Rowan has extensive experience in both rural and regional positions and has acquired a keen appreciation of the challenges that confront medical professionals.

Dr Rowan’s priorities as AMA President will be to;

  1. Ensure the transparency of appointments and adequate clinician representation on Local Health and Hospital Network Boards and Medicare Locals;
  2. Lobby government for improved funding of after-hours services and aged care;
  3. Continue to argue for adequate MBS item indexation;
  4. Ensure post-graduate training opportunities are expanded for new medical graduates and that supervisors are adequately recognised;
  5. Continue to highlight the failure of public policy initiatives, including GP Super Clinics, as a result of inadequate consultation and poor planning; and
  6. Defend General Practice and continue to build strong collaborative working relationships with other professional medical bodies.

Medilaw also has two specialists nominated as members of the AMA Council for 2012-13, Psychiatrist Dr Benjamin Duke and ENT Surgeon Dr Sharon Kelly.  Dr Duke will represent the Greater Brisbane Area, through determining questions and matters of policy for the Association and making By-laws about ethical considerations. Dr Kelly has taken up the position of Specialist Craft Group Councillor.

Warm congratulations to, Dr Rowan, Dr Duke and Dr Kelly for their elected positions with AMA Queensland.
