Summary
Dr Zappala worked within the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps as a Reserve Regimental Medical Officer taking care of the health of deployable officers including aspects of preventative health and exercise planning. He held command of medical assets at unit level. He continued on to do further advanced training in Thoracic and Sleep Medicine with the Royal Brisbane Hospital involving patient consultations and multidisciplinary clinics. There was also a strong emphasis on student and junior medical officer teaching. In 2005 he undertook a Fellowship involving clinical research with a sub-specialised inpatient, outpatient and consultation service component with The Royal Brompton Hospital in their Interstitial Lung Diseases Unit. This position was followed with a further Honorary Research Fellowship involving further data collection and collegiate interaction. Dr Zappala is currently involved in an examination of the effects of posture change in obesity on respiratory function with the Royal Brisbane Hospital.
